ATNA,June10: A panchayat in Purnia district has ordered a 10-year-old girl not to approach police and instead wait for eight years till she is 18, so that the 13-year-old boy, who allegedly attempted to rape her and later confessed his crime, could marry her.
However, after remaining under pressure for almost two weeks, the girl visited the janata darbar of Purnia SP Nishant Tiwari along with her family members on Thursday. After the SP’s intervention, the family members of the girl finally lodged an FIR against the accused boy on Friday. Police soon swung into action and arrested the boy on the charge of attempting to rape the minor girl.
According to police, the incident took place on May 23 when the girl, a Class VI student of a government-run school, was on the terrace of her house at Taalbari Sethiyara village under the same panchayat. The accused boy allegedly attempted to rape her on the terrace. Police said the accused is a neighbour of the girl. The panchayat falls under the jurisdiction of Baisi police station in the district.
Police sources said the panchayat’s diktat came after the girl’s family members approached it to lodge their complaint.
“Deputy SP Sunita Kumari has recorded the statement of the girl. Five other members of the boy’s family, who had allegedly misbehaved with the girl’s family during the panchayat meeting, have also been named in the FIR,” the SP said.
SHO of Baisi police station T P Singh said efforts are on to arrest the accused family members of the boy. “The girl resides at her maternal place along with her mother. Her father deserted them and married another woman. The FIR has been lodged by girl’s maternal grandmother Sarvati Devi. The family has a small plot of land at the village,” the SHO said, adding the girl’s father resides at the neighbouring Marwa village.
