Brazil, Colombia to use local footballers for friendly
Rio de Janeiro, Dec 9 (IANS) The friendly match between Brazil and Colombia to raise money for families affected by last week’s plane crash, which killed 19 footballers of Brazilian club Chapecoense, is likely to feature only local players.
The fixture has been tentatively earmarked for January 22 at the Maracana stadium here, Globo Esporte said on Thursday, reports Xinhua. All gate proceeds will be donated to families of those hit by the disaster.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has not given up hope of convincing European clubs to release their players for the match.
But managers are unlikely to accept the request given the fixture is not on an official global governing body FIFA date.
Seventy-one people died when a chartered flight carrying the Chapecoense football side crashed just before its planned destination near Medellin.
The victims included 19 Chapecoense players and all of the Brazilian club’s coaching staff. There were only six survivors.
