Chinese Minister Wang Yi to meet Goa CM to check on BRICS preparation ahead of summit
New Delhi August 12:Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will on Friday meet Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to review the logistics and security arrangements for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposed visit to the coastal state for the BRICS summit in October.In what is rather an unusual step for an external affairs minister to oversee preparation of an international summit that will be attended by his President.
“He is here to review security. He will visit the spots where hotels are located, functions are (to be) held, the route, the arrangements done by the state, the situation here,” Parsekar told IANS at the state secretariat late on Thursday.
“The Chinese President is coming and therefore they are meeting us to keep track of the preparation,” the Chief Minister said.
Yi is also expected to meet Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi on Saturday.
It is understood that Wang will visit the venue for BRICS Summit at Goa which will be attended by President Xi Jinping. It is also learnt that Wang would like to oversee preparations for the summit scheduled for October 15-16.
While preparatory teams are sent ahead of visits by leaders to the host countries world over, it is rather unusual for a foreign minister to physically oversee preparations for his or her leader ahead of an international summit.
In Delhi, Wang will meet his counterpart Sushma Swaraj and other officials and other officials and will seek support for China’s position on the Hague Court verdict on the South China Sea (SCS) dispute with the Philippines.
China has refused to accept the verdict and is focusing on maintaining status quo on artificial islands besides increasing show of military strength in the region.
