NEW DELHI March 19, 2018: India snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in a stunning final match with Bangladesh on Sunday night. The victory led to celebrations across the country in a grand manner, said media reports.

In the thriller match, Dinesh Karthik hit 29 off just eight balls to get India past their 167-run target in Nidahas Trophy 2018 final at Colombo against Bangladesh.

Needing 5 runs to win off the last ball, Karthik held his nerve to hit Soumya Sarkar for six, triggering celebrations across India. Skipper Rohit Sharma, who topped scored with 56 runs, in the post-match presentation, lauded Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Karthik, said the reports.

Rohit said: “The way we finished off was perfect and very happy to see Dinesh doing what he did. He didn’t get much of game time, the way he came out and showed character was very crucial for us. That was the reason I held Dinesh back, I have seen him play over the years and his experience matters a lot.”

Earlier, riding on Sabbir Rahman’s classy half-century, Bangladesh piled up 166/8 in the designated 20 overs. Off-spinner Washington Sundar (1/20 in 4 overs) and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (3/18 in 4 overs) were brilliant in the Powerplay but the duo of Vijay Shankar (0/48 in 4 overs) and Shardul Thakur (0/45 in 4 overs) leaked 93 runs between them on a good batting surface.

While the Washington-Chahal duo bowled 20 dot balls between them with only one boundary, Shankar and Thakur conceded 10 boundaries and four sixes.

The last six overs of the Bangladesh innings yielded 66 runs — mostly coming from Sabbir’s blade.
