India proved yet again they're truly No.1 Test side: Anurag Thakur

New Delhi [India], Dec.12 (ANI): Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur on Monday congratulated the Indian cricket team for taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match Test series against England at the end of the fourth match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked his 24th five-wicket haul and seventh 10-wicket haul as India bundled out England for 195 runs in their second innings to clinch a crushing win by an innings and 36 runs in the fourth Test.
Congratulating the Virat Kohli-led side for their emphatic win, Thakur said that India have shown once again that they truly deserved to be the number one side in the world.
"I would like to congratulate Virat Kohli and Team India for their brilliant performance. They have showed that they are truly the number one team in the world. The way Jayant Yadav has performed needs to be praised," Thakur told ANI in an exclusive conversation.
The BCCI president said there is combination of both young and senior players in the team who know how to perform under pressure.
"Team India has continuously played good cricket and they won series after series and became the number one team in the world. This clearly shows that we have a young leader, who knows how to perform under pressure and can win matches for India. There is a combination of young and senior players," he said.
The match witnessed an all-round performance from the Indian side.
While bowlers wreaked havoc on the England batsmen, scorching knocks by Kohli and Jayant Yadav helped India post a respectable first-innings total of 631 runs in reply to the opposition's total of 400.
Kohli, who was declared `Man of the Match`, smashed a brilliant 235-run knock to become the first Indian skipper to score three double-tons in a year. It was his first double century in Tests against England. He reached the milestone in 302 balls with 23 fours but no sixes.
Kohli was ably supported by Jayant (104), who not also brought his maiden Test century but also shared a huge 241-run partnership with the skipper for the eighth wicket. Jayant also became the first individual to score a century at the number nine spot.
"If you look at the first match in Rajkot, India were on the verge of losing the game. But our players did well, they saved the game. But in the next three matches in Vizag, Mohali and Mumbai, the Indian team came back and performed well in bowling as well as in the batting area. We performed as per the conditions available. If England could score 400 runs in the first innings. India scored 600 that clearly show we did better batting. We took good wickets, bowlers performed well from Ashwin to Jayant Yadav to other bowlers," Thakur said.
Throwing light on next year's four-match Test series against Australia, Thakur expressed hope that the Indian team would continue to perform well in the upcoming series and remain the number one side for many more years to come.
By defeating the Alastair Cook-led side, India have now regained the Anthony de mello trophy which was with England after they won here in 2012.
India, who are now unbeaten for 17 matches in the longest format of the game, will now play the dead rubber fifth Test match against England beginning on December 16 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. (ANI)
