Kenya’s Korir eyes Boston marathon crown
Nairobi, Dec 16 (IANS) Kenya’ s former Boston marathon champion Wesley Korir and Caroline Rotich will return to the US to try and reclaim their titles on April 17, 2017.
However, Korir is not considering competing at the World Championships in London, irrespective of his performance in Boston, reports Xinhua news agency.
“I will focus on winning in Boston. The other races are not important. I had my chance in Rio and as you all know, a mix-up of water caused me to exit the 42- kilometer race at the Olympics,” said the athlete, who is also a Member of Parliament in Kenya.
However, Korir will face stiff challenge from reigning champion Lemi Bernahu while Atsede Baysa will lead the women’s quest.
Having never finished outside of the top five in Boston, Korir also returns after winning in 2012 in one of the warmest Boston Marathons in race history.
“When six athletes who have so richly enhanced the history of the Boston Marathon are returning to compete again, it’s very exciting,” said BAA chief executive officer Tom Grilk.
“These are some of the world’s finest runners, and we can’t wait to welcome them back.”
