Martin Schulz elected leader to challenge Merkel in national election
Berlin [Germany], Mar. 20 (ANI): Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) elected former European Parliament president Martin Schulz as their leader and challenger to Chancellor Angela Merkel for the national election in September later this year.
According to DW, Schulz was elected unanimously and it marks the first time an SPD chancellor candidate has ever been nominated with 100 percent of the vote.
After three national-election defeats and four years as the junior partner in a grand coalition with the conservatives, the SPD hopes that they finally have a candidate who can challenge Merkel. (ANI)
