Movies on sweet, syrupy ball ‘Rosogolla’ to hit silver screen

NEW DELHI March 27, 2018: The story of creator of sweet syrupy balls which waters mouth of every Indian, especially those living in eastern and northern part of the country, is set to hit silver screen.

The Bengali film ‘Rosogolla’ would be directed by Pavel and produced by Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy.

The inventor of ‘Rosogulla’, ‘Rasgulla’ as they say in north India, Nobin Chandra Das, who began his journey in 19th century from Kolkata, had a humble background and he steered his way to make the syrupy ball of world fame. The film would capture NC Das’ journey from humble background to a business tycoon.

Pavel said the film was a feature film instead of being a biopic. “It is partly based on real-life events and there are some fictional accounts too,” Pavel was quoted in a media report.

To maintain the originality of the film, Pavel studied the preserved works at the Victoria Memorial, including paintings by Thomas and William Daniels, Calcutta Gazette, besides works of researchers such as PT Nair and others.

The film ‘Rosogolla’ would capture lives and times of NC Das.

Pavel said Das is the protagonist in the film, which traces the discovery of the sweet syrupy ball made by him after months of efforts in 1868. It also focuses on the love life of a young Das.

Das died in 1925 at the age of 80 years.

“We will capture the life of Das from the age of six to 32-33 years. The film will also feature Das’ childhood days and show how he set up the first outlet in Kolkata and he came to be known as ‘Nobin Moira’,” Pavel was quoted in a media report.

The sweet ball was first liked by a Marwari businessman who popularised it. Contemporaries of Das who were also in the business -Bhola Moira, and Bhim Chandra Nag – would also be featured in the film.

Pavel said the descendants of Das, KC Das and his family, who now have chain of leading sweet shops in the country, have welcomed the film on the ‘Columbus of Rosogolla’.

Pavel thanked Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy for keeping faith in him.

The film is now slated for release by this December.
