Mangaluru,July1: Thousands of students, teachers and staff members of the reputed St Aloysius College institution gathered here on Saturday, July 1 to protest the renaming of St Aloysius College Road as “Mulki Sundararama Shetty Road”.

Their protest also garnered support from the alumni as well as representatives of organisations who participated in the protest march which began from the college premises passing through Jyothi Ambedkar circle, Hampankatta to Town Hall and back to the starting point.

Addressing the gathering before embarking on the protest march Fr Praveen Martis, principal of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) said that the decision to rename the road has deeply hurt the sentiments of many. The college which is regarded as one of the most reputed colleges of the city has a history dating back to 137 years.

He said that they would continue to stage such peaceful protests demanding retention of the name of St Aloysious College Road.” This was St Aloysius College Road and it will forever be St Aloysius College Road,” he said.

Chief whip of Legislative Council MLC Ivan D’Souza, an alumnus of the college extending his support to the cause said that it was shameful to see that students of the 137-year-old institute have had to step onto the streets to protest against the renaming decision of the road. “The Aloysians are part of one family and I would raise the issue in the legislative session,” he said.

Catholic Sabha Mangaluru president Anil Lobo, former president of Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino and many others were present.
