Thunderstorm likely to hit National capital, Uttar Pradesh today; Delhi Metro, flight could be affected
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that thunderstorms and gusty winds may hit several northern Indian states, including Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and Delhi on Tuesday (08.05.2018). The IMD in a bulletin has said that the wind speed is predicted to touch 50-70 km per hour.
As a precautionary measure, the Delhi government has announced that all evening schools across the national capital would remain closed on Tuesday (08.05.2018). Schools will also be closed in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
On Monday night a dust storm swept Delhi affecting the flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Seeing the weather warning, the Delhi Metro is also treading with extreme caution in running of trains.
Private weather agency Skymet in its forecast has said that there was less chance of severe dust storm in Delhi now. However, the national capital might have spell of strong winds up to 70 Kmph, it said.
The AAP government has issued advisory to people. It has asked people to keep children inside home or shelter. It had also adviced people to unplug unnecessary electrical appliances. It has said that taking bath or shower in running might make people vulnerable to electric shock as lightning current might run through the pipe. It has asked people to keep away from doors, windows, fire places, stoves, bath-tubs, or any other electrical charge conductors.
The Delhi Traffic Police’s has advised people not to panic and avoid travelling when the storm hits the place.
Those who are stopping on the road or parking their vehicle have been advised to keep away from overhead electrical wires, tinned roofs, trees, etc., it said.
