Tiruchirapalli immigration officer held for possessing 1.6 kg gold smuggled from Malaysian
Tiruchirapalli, Jun 29 : The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs department today detained an Assistant Immigration Officer at Tiruchirapalli International Airport for allegedly possessing 1.6 kilogram gold biscuits worth Rs 43 lakh smuggled from Malaysia.
Official sources said the AIU sleuths secured the Assistant Immigration Officer Balaji Bhaskar, who was found in the possession of gold biscuits, while conducting checks on suspicion. The gold biscuits were apparently handed over to Mr Bhaskar by a passenger identified as Sadiq Ali after he landed at the airport from Kuala Lumpur by an Air Asia flight in the early hours.
The AIU sleuths also detained Sadiq Ali and investigations were on to ascertain whether the officer attempted to help the air passenger to bring out the smuggled gold biscuits from the airport.
