Woman killed as security forces and militants exchanged fire in south Kashmir’s Anantnag

Anantnag,July1:One civilian was killed as militants and security forces exchanged fire in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Militants are holed up in a house.

A police spokesperson said security forces cordoned off Birnhi-Batpora, Dailgam, early in the morning after receiving specific information regarding presence of militants.

“While  the cordon was being laid some militants outside a house fired upon  the security personnel which was retaliated. In the cross firing one woman sustained injuries and later on succumbed,” said the spokesperson.
A woman was injured as locals and security forces clashed in the area. She later succumbed to injuries. Police identified her as Tahira Begum. Security forces used force to chase the crowd who were trying to help the militants to escape the cordon.

“Militants are now holed up in a house. Efforts are on to take out the civilians out of the house.  Militants using civilians as human shields,” said the spokesman. Two to three militants are believed hiding in the area.
