Mumbai, Aug 17: Bollywood film actress and model Nargis Fakhri has reportedly been conned out of around Rs 6 lakh through fraudulent transactions made on her credit card in the United States.
The US citizen of Czech-Pakistani origin alerted the bank, got her card blocked, and filed a complaint with Mumbai police late on Monday.
Actor learns about fraud after receiving notification about a transaction from the card-issuing bank; Juhu cops registers case and will rope in cyber police for leads.
The con job was reportedly pulled off early on Monday. It is suspected that the alleged swindlers copied Nargis’ card information and made a clone. In all, 14 transactions were made totalling around $9,062.
The actor recorded her statement late on Tuesday, said sources. While the Juhu police have registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, they will seek the help of the cyber police for leads.
Fakhri, known for her roles in Rockstar, Madras Cafe and Azhar and many other films, has told the police that the card was with her when she received anotification from Kotak Mahindra bank about the transaction. She has shared the details with the cops.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Satynarayan Chaudary said they have registered a case, but refused to divulge more. “It’s too early to say anything.”
The crime seems to be a case of data theft, said a police source. “We suspect the fraud might have been committed outside India as the transaction is in dollars. We are trying to ascertain the point of sale, location and other details.”
Online crooks can steal a person’s credit card data through various ways such as sending malicious codes or malwares to one’s computer and phishing -talking a card user into giving out his/her details.
While the BKC cyber police have been roped in, the source said, the Juhu cops will call for records from the bank of the places where the card was used in the recent past. “The probe will be carried out to ascertain if the data was stolen in India or abroad.”
