Mangalore, Aug 06: Breaking all stereotypes, a Dalit woman has been appointed as priest in Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple in Karnataka’s Mangalore city.

The move is bold as Dalits are still not allowed to enter some temples or localities dominated by the upper castes. The two new archaks, Lakshmi, 65, from Chilimbi and Chandravathi, 45,  from Ullal, who were trained to perform  pooja, entered the temple and offered pooja to Lord Gokarnanatha and  other deities on Monday.

Congress leader Janardhan Poojary from Mangalore had already set a great example last year by appointing widows as archakas (priests) of Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha temple. This year he has gone a step further by inducting Dalit women as its priests. On Monday, the two new archakas — Lakshmi (65) from Chilimbi and Chandravathi (45) from Ullal —  entered the temple and offered their pooja to Lord Gokarnanatha and other deities.

Lakshmi, the woman priest, has been working in the temple since last year.
“I am very proud and happy with my work. I have been working here since last one year. I work here daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Lakshmi told ANI.

Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, also known as Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Kshetra, is in the Kudroli area of Mangalore in Karnataka.
