New Delhi, July 28: Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday slammed UPA’s record on inflation as he responded to Rahul Gandhi’s charges on price rise and his jibe ‘Arhar Modi’ directed at the Prime Minister.

“There was policy paralysis during the UPA regime and we inherited a double digit inflation from the previous government,” Jaitley said in Lok Sabha responding to opposition’s attack on the issue of price rise.

Stating that the present inflation was due to seasonal factors, Jaitley said the government had taken several steps to control prices of essential commodities.

“Inflation is under control, I expect it to reduce further with good monsoon,” Arun Jaitley said.

Earlier, during the short discussion, Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of rising prices, saying “the PM talks about everything but price rise”.

“Modi government celebrated its second happy birthday a few days back. While addressing the people, he spoke about Make In India, Connect India, Digital India, but he does not talk about price rise. Not once did he talk about pulses, potatoes and tomatoes,” Rahul said in the Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi said that price rise is the most important issue before people and false promises cannot be made on it.
“You can make false claims on Startup India, Make in India, but not on rising prices,” he added.

You may make as many “hollow promises” as you want but give a date by when prices of dal will come down, Rahul said.
Reminding the Prime Minister of his election speech in Uttar Pradesh in 2014 — when Modi had said he wanted to be a “chowkidar (guard)” for the country and not the Prime Minister, Gandhi said the task of safe-guarding interests of poor people now should be “left to the Congress”.

Gandhi lamented that today a huge quantity of pulses are being lootedunder Modi as the “guard”.
