Poor Nadezhda Bazhina appeared to approach the end of the springboard at the wrong angle and, despite performing a number of somersaults, she crashed backwards into the water.

Judges handed her zero points for the horrific finish – ending her Olympic dream.

Footage at the 3 metre springboard semi final event showed the 28-year-old’s despairing coach with his head in his hands.
