New Delhi, August 3: A recent spate of seizures in Delhi have revealed that new drugs, such as mephedrone, popularly known as Meow Meow or M-Cat is finding its way to popularity in Delhi. Sold at around a tenth of the price of cocaine, this new drug has found itself a regular customer base in parties in Delhi.

Delhi tops the list nationally with regard to seizures of the banned substance with the state accounting for nearly 90 percent of the hauls as noted by The National Control Bureau (NCB).

Fourteen kilograms of the drug were seized last Tuesday by the Delhi police, which they believe may have been part of a bigger 500-kg drug consignment.

Ironically, a customs official has been found to be part of the racket. The official was in charge of safekeeping the stock, who then sold the drugs to various peddlers. Eight of the alleged peddlers were arrested Tuesday from Delhi and Mumbai, while police are still on the hunt for the official.

Usage of such contraband substances are on the steady rise among party-goers in Delhi. These psychotropic drug alter the mood and perception of the user making them more sensitive to music and light for a period ranging from a good six to seven hours making them very popular among party goers. Experts say that youngsters in Delhi are experimenting with the drug by mixing it with their drinks and also by making a cocktail of different drugs.

The drug Meow-meow is more widely peddled because of its easy availability and more importantly because until February 2015, the drug was not covered under the NDPS. In 2015-16, 57kg of Meow Meow was seized by NCB’s Delhi zone alone, compared to 3kg in 2014-15.
